FONDAZIONE VILLA EMMA - 2ND PRIZE
During the Second World War, a group of Jewish youth emigrating from Eastern Europe sheltered and hid in the historical town of Nonantola, Italy
Thanks to the efforts of the local population, the persecuted children could escape deportation and reach Switzerland for safe refuge.
The FONDAZIONE VILLA EMMA - named after the estate where these young refugees once lived - studies the history of racial persecutions and conducts research on the history and phenomena of migration. The foundation hosted an open competition for a new design of its headquarters that could better connect its initiatives with the local town and region. The awarded proposal envisions a low building complex formed by pure, transparent shapes protruding out of a solid brick spine. Between these structures, a lush garden would integrate the Foundation with the public.
