CLINIC N/m main

CLINIC N/m

CLINIC N/m is constructed on an incline, reminiscent of the hills developed for Senri New Town in the 1960s, where small medical facilities are grouped to form a special complex along the perimeter of a regular residential district.

The building consists of a clinic and an adjacent residence for the doctor’s family. Due to the necessity for the clinic to remain functional throughout the remodeling process, construction was conducted in two phases. First, the new clinic was built on the vacant portion of the lot along the inclined ground. After the clinic moved to the new building, the existing structure was demolished to make way for a new residential wing.

The single-story structure is primarily made of wood. Through the Container Structure System, eleven simple containers - seven for the clinic and four for the residence - with various functions were arranged to accommodate the site and its topography. They are interconnected by glass walls to form organic patterns of space. This building exemplifies the power of CSS in its "flexibility of extension/reduction of buildings" in architectural design.
